An Eclectic Luthier
Greetings, I’m Scott Wise. I live and work in Margaret River, a town in South-Western Australia, in Wadandi Boodja an area known for its forests, surf and fine wines. I grew up in the city of Perth, the capital city of western Australia and one of the most isolated cities in the world. After completing a science undergraduate degree in 1973 I started working as a musician and repairing stringed instruments. I never stopped. The isolation of Western Australia meant my musical activities and lutherie work both became very diverse, and after some encouragement from master mandolin maker Steve Gilchrist in 1976 whilst on tour in Melbourne I started building a variety of guitars, mandolins and ‘ukulele. In the early days I built both acoustic and solidbody electric guitars and basses but since moving to my current location in 1990 I have concentrated on a diverse range of acoustic instruments including violins. I was taught violin making and restoration in the 1980’s in the U.S. My experience in all the different styles of music and instruments has taught me much about how historical development, musical genres, engineering, tonewoods, strings, amplification, adhesives, finishes, acoustical design and playing techniques all contribute to responsive, complex instruments. I hope the various pages on this site are of interest.
